Day 2 - Senegal

God' Word brings Joy

Senghor’s voice was strong above the whirring of the electric fan and the voices of children playing outside in the street. On a hot and humid September morning in Senegal, he welcomed the opportunity to talk about what Jesus means to him.

“I was a Muslim and I was sick,” Senghor said. “Then I met a Bible League-trained church planter. He gave me a [Project Philip] booklet and I read it. It was interesting to me and I studied it with him. Soon we finished the study and I received my own Bible.

“I was so happy when I received my Bible. I took my Bible home and began reading it on my own, one night while I was sleeping, I had a revelation that the Bible is the truth. Soon my sickness disappeared.

“I want to thank my brothers and sisters in Christ. When I read the Bible, I feel joy because I’ve seen that what the Bible is saying is the truth. I will continue reading the Bible until the end of my days.”

Now Senghor is happy following Jesus, despite the difficulties that have come into his life since he became a Christian.

“My family has abandoned me and I don’t have a job now,” he said. Senghor once worked as a security guard to support his wife and eight children, who are all Muslims. They no longer respect him and see him as 'fallen'. Being ignored by his wife and children is particularly difficult for a Senegalese man. “Now the church is my family,” he adds.

Senghor shares the Gospel with his friends because he wants them to know the truth. “Jesus Christ is the way,” he said. “Soon I will be baptised. I will continue to be a Christian to the end of my days. I have put my trust in Jesus Christ.

Kids Spot

What kind of weather would Senegal experience during the “harmattan”?

The harmattan affects countries in West Africa—which includes Senegal.

It’s described as a heavy and thick amount of dust in the air, similar to a heavy fog which can severely limit visibility and block the sun for several days.

The thick dust blows south from Sahara into the Gulf of Guinea between the end of November and the middle of March (winter).

When the Harmattan blows hard, it can push dust and sand all the way to North America.
